No producer featured here pays a commission, a listing fee or any other consideration to appear on this page or to be recommended. That's what separates this directory from a paid listing service: no one buys their place.

How to check an essential oil producer
Before buying, for personal or professional use, six pieces of information separate a producer from a label.

The full Latin botanical name
Not just "lavender": Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula x intermedia are not the same oil.

The chemotype, when the species has several
A thyme or a rosemary can yield very different oils depending on where it grows.

The part of the plant distilled
Flower, leaf, twig or peel: the composition changes with the organ.

A precise origin
A commune or a region, not "France" or "Europe".

The extraction method
Steam distillation for most oils, cold expression for citrus peel.

Frequently asked questions
Ask for three things: a precise origin (a commune or a region, not just "France"), a batch number, and the distillation date. A producer who distills their own plants can tell you where and when that batch was harvested. A reseller buying in bulk often cannot.
Not necessarily. Organic certification guarantees how the plants were grown, checked by a certification body. It says nothing about the chemical composition of a given batch. An oil can be organic and have a chemotype that doesn't suit its intended use, or the reverse. The two proofs answer different questions.
Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry identifies and quantifies the molecules in a batch. It is the only document that describes the oil you actually receive, rather than the species in general. Many small distillers don't run one for every batch, which is why this directory states, producer by producer, whether it is confirmed, not available, or unconfirmed.
