Declining a batch that was, in fact, authentic

A brand asked us to source a French catnip (Nepeta cataria) essential oil for a mosquito-repellent formulation. We identified a producer, then requested the batch's GC/MS certificate of analysis before recommending anything. The batch was authentic: genuine French catnip oil, correctly identified and documented. But the analysis showed low nepetalactone content and a citronellal-heavy profile, already present in the blend through citronella and eucalyptus. The batch added nothing new to the formulation: it duplicated chemistry the blend already had. We declined that batch, not for a quality defect, but because it did not fit the intended use.
